Hundreds attend carol concert for St John Eye Hospital

19th December 2017

Around 300 people gathered at the City Parish Church of St John the Baptist in Cardiff on Friday 15th December, to celebrate the story of Christmas and to raise money for the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital.

Guests were welcomed to the service by the Chaplain of the Priory for Wales, The Reverend Canon Dr Sarah Rowland Jones. The service included lessons, prayers and carols. Lessons were read by:

  • HM Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan and President of the St John Council for Wales, Mrs Morfudd Meredith;
  • Prior for Wales, Sir Paul Williams;
  • Chief Executive of St John Cymru-Wales, Keith Dunn OBE;
  • Chancellor of the Priory for Wales, Stephen Hughes;
  • Vice Chancellor of the Priory for Wales, Peter Vaughan;
  • Ambassador of the Priory for Wales, Roy Noble OBE; and
  • St John Cymru-Wales Cadet of the Year, Mitri Sharaiha

The Hospitaller and Almoner of the Priory for Wales, Dr Akram Baig made an appeal for donations for the Eye Hospital, followed by prayers led by The Reverend David Morris.

11 year old Cadet Eleanor Jessop, from the Loughor Division, also read a poem that she had written about the Eye Hospital (see below).

Everyone gets treated no matter what

Year after year the first aid is done

Eye surgery is popular in the West Bank

Hospitallers worked in the first hospice of Jerusalem

Over and over the nurses perform major operations

Severe eye damage happens to adults and children out there

People may struggle to get to the hospital

I wish to help all who suffer

Transport is also a problem

And not to get rejected at the border

Let’s all try to help them with funding

Optical care

Funds will ensure help for all

Jerusalem should be a place of happiness

Every day war causes hundreds of people to get injured

Running in the rubble is the children’s thought of fun

Under the blazing sun they cause terrible eye problems playing with rubble

So leave dust rubble and broken buildings alone children

And try to keep your eyes safe

Let’s help please fund St John all you rich families

Every day you do not suffer like all in Jerusalem and Gaza

Make sure you do all you can to help

The Cambrian Male Voice Choir, Roath Park Primary School Choir and theatre star Laura Mansel provided music for the event.
