St John Wales volunteers Robert and Gareth Hancock were not on duty, but on holiday in Lanzarote when they put their lifesaving skills into action.
They were relaxing by the pool when they heard cries for help.
They rushed to see what was happening, and found an unconscious child had been pulled from the water. The six-year-old girl was turning blue, but with no first aid kit and no oxygen to hand, the situation was desperate. Robert and Gareth quickly took control and began to give CPR – skills they had mastered through years of service to St John Wales. They were able to get the girl breathing again and monitored her until the ambulance arrived. The girl went on to make a full recovery.
Robert and Gareth remained calm because they are equipped with the training and knowledge to save lives.
